Life During Wartime
10.15.01

As the U.S. and its allies deploy their colossal firepower around Afghanistan, the world is bracing for a war on terrorism. What effect will it have on the global economy, which was already weakening before the hijacked planes struck New York and Washington? How will daily life change under the ever-present threat of terrorism?

By Mario Tama/Getty Images

One thing is sure: America and its friends will use every means at their disposal--military, diplomatic, economic and moral--to catch the terrorists and, it is hoped, to make the world a safer place. They'll use the tools of capitalism--banks, technology, the internet--to counterattack. Driven by the need to combat a shadowy and amorphous enemy, entrepreneurial ingenuity will produce new tools to do the job.

But the terrorists in our midst have access to many of the same capitalist weapons available to the U.S. and its friends. Osama bin Laden and his cohort are not only using drug money and extortion to further their ends. They invest in legitimate businesses to raise fresh funds and camouflage their activities.

No one has any doubts that it will take a long time to nail terrorism. Victory can come about only by understanding the nature and scope of the threat that faces civilization. Know thy enemy. And know thyself.
