WORLD PEACE | ||||||||||||||||
|
Who is threatening the World Peace? After the end of the Cold War a decade ago, the arms race in the world should have been stopped. However, it has not. The figures show that the leaders producing conventional weapons are still dumping huge quantities of deadly weapons in developing countries. Perhaps they want to maintain the growth of their defence industry and continue to earn from the defence exports. And it seems that they are least bothered about the fact that their weapons are causing new conflicts, disturbing balance of power in the various regions, fanning civil wars and ultimately threatening the World peace. The most unfortunate aspect of this situation is that the countries such as United States who are champions of the World Peace are on top of the list of arms suppliers. Their persistent supplies of weapons to developing countries reflect that the World peace is not what they really desire as their actions contradict their claims for working towards a durable peace in the World. While speaking in Ottawa on October 8, 1999, President Clinton said that his only wish was to lay down a foundation for peace in the world. But, surprisingly, the United States and Russia are among the few countries that have declined to sign an international treaty banning the manufacture, supply and use of land mines. When a country is not ready to stop producing and selling land mines, how could it stop selling more sophisticated and expensive weapons? Is not it a food for thought? The rejection of much trumpeted Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) by the US Senate on the pretext that it was against the national interests of the United States also speaks a lot about the US intention to rule the World by using its military might and forcing others to abandon their defence mechanisms and relying only and only on US weapons and military support. We are re-producing some of the studies that show the statistics of arms supplies in the world. We hope that our readers would find this information interesting and useful while analysing the words and deeds of the so-called champions of World Peace. |
