Obituaries for Nov. 1, 2001

JOHNSON
Charlotte Elizabeth Sorenson Schenck Johnson, age 86, passed away Oct. 31. She was a resident at Alterra-Sterling House of New Braunfels, Texas since it opened in 1997.
Charlotte was born March 11, 1915, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She descended from missionary stock, as her maternal grandfather was one of th e early missionary doctors to the Hawaiian Islands in the 1800s. Her father’s family came to the islands from Denmark as shipbuilders and helped construct a ship for the Queen of Hawaii.
Her parents were Olaf and Juliette Sorenson of Honolulu. She attended school in hawaii and California and studied English at Vassar for two years. Charlotte married John Schenck of Honolulu in 1935 and they had 2 daughters, Pat Edinger and Barbara Coughlin. In 1943, John died of a heart attack. She later met and married David P. Johnson, a naval officer, who was in Hawaii at the end of WWII. The family moved to Nowata, OK where Dave was a publisher and editor of a daily paper.
Charlotte and husband Dave later moved to Washington State where they operated a newspaper and publishing business. Subsequently they moved again when Dave taught journalism at Big Bend Community College. Upon retirement, they settled in New Braunfels.
Through the years, Charlotte knew the importance of family and friends and always kept in touch through her love of writing. She shared with both her husbands a love of words, books, and letter writing. She wrote interesting commentaries for Dave’s newspaper, book reviews for her church and wonderful travelogues about their many trips. She shared with Dave, her love of adventure and life. They enjoyed traveling and traveled to Europe, all 50 states and made many trips to the Hawaiian islands.
When Dave was ill, he ceased calling her “the little woman’ and instead called her his “little angle.” In the end, she was the wind beneath his wings. Charlotte and Dave were active member of th e New Braunfels Church of Christ, a wonderful source of support and comfort to them.
She was preceased by her husband Dave in 1994.and her daughter, Patricia Edinger, in 1999.
Daughter Barbara Coughlin and husband Doug, their children Connie Coughlin, Julie and husband Don Hotaling, and Greg and wife Karen Scheffler survive her; also, her son-in-law Jerry Edinger and his children David Edinger, Walter and his wife Susan Edinger, Sharon and her husband Duane Schlosser. She had 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests a memorial offering be made to the American Heart Association or Hope Hospice of New Braunfels.
A funeral service will be held in the Zoeller Funeral Home chapel 11 a. m. Friday, Nov. 2nd. A viewing will be held during the hours of 11 a. m. until 5 p. m. family members will be present from 4 to 5 p. m. Interment will be at Guadalupe Valley memorial Park.
