A Palestinian fisherman offers his noon prayer on the coast of the Gaza strip, Wednesday Oct. 31, 2001, as the another fisherman sails in the Mediterranean Sea. Palestinian fishermen once headed to fishing grounds 13 miles (21 kilometers) off the shore, but since Israeli - Palestinian violence broke out, they have been limited to the waters just three miles (five kilometers) from the coastline.

Zionists arrest Muslim religious leader for entering mosque without "permit"

Occupied Jerusalem: 1 November, 2001 (IAP News) - Pursuing a vindictively racist policy against non-Jews in Jerusalem, the Israeli occupation authorities on Thursday arrested an Islamic scholar on charges of "entering the Aqsa Mosque without a permit."

Palestinian sources said Zionist police raided the Jerusalem home of Sheikh Ahmed Jamous at dawn Thursday and detained him for questioning.

A spokesman for the apartheid police said Abu Jamous was implicated in two violations, teaching the Qura'an and entering the Aqsa Mosque without a permit.

Sheikh Jamous described the charges as "fatuous and silly."

"A Muslim doesn't need a permit from Jews to enter his mosque just as a Jew doesn't need a permit from Muslims to enter his synagogue. The Zionists are occupiers in Jerusalem as the Nazis were in France. The Nazis left, and the Zionists will have to leave, the sooner the better."

Abu Jamous castigated "Zionist arrogance and racism."

"Where in the world a Muslim scholar is barred from teaching the Qura'an except under this Nazi-like Israeli occupation regime."

After public pressure, Jamous was released Thursday afternoon, having paid a fine, pending a trial.

Muslim leaders in Palestine viewed with gravity the detention of Jamous on concocted charges.

"This is a grave development. It seems the Jews are determined to ignite a religious war between Muslims and Jews. We are against any religious war, but if such a thing is imposed on us, the Jews will be the losers," said Sheikh Yousef Kawasmi of Al-khalil.
