"War Profiteering"
The House has broken with the spirit of unity by voting, almost entirely on party lines, for massive new corporate tax breaks, while doing almost nothing for workers and the unemployed. This is economically backwards as well as unfair.
"We can do more to stimulate the economy by helping everyday people than by giving billions of dollars in tax breaks to America's biggest corporations. Congress must vote against these giveaways."

Join us in this call for common sense. Act now to (1) speak out, (2) tell others, and (3) help out.

YOUR STATEMENT LETTER

TO: (your representatives)
FROM: (your name and email)
SUBJECT:
Stimulus not greed
__________

Dear Representative,

I urge you to oppose the multi-billion-dollar tax giveaways to America's biggest corporations contained in the "stimulus" bill passed by the House.

(Your personal note)

By retroactively repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax, the House bill would provide massive rebate checks to many of America's biggest companies, including:

$1.4 billion for IBM
$833 million for General Motors
$671 million for General Electric
$572 million for Chevron Texaco
$254 million for Enron

It would also allow corporations to continue to store their profits overseas as a tax shelter. This would send money _out_ of the U.S. economy. It's backwards.

A real stimulus would put more money in the hands of everyday people who need it most - by emphasizing cuts in payroll taxes, for example.

Helping people would make economic sense. Giving billions in tax breaks to America's biggest corporations doesn't.

Sincerely,

(your name)
(your address)

Other Resources

This article from Saturday's New York Times business section details how the stimulus package is designed primarily to benefit corporations. This Sunday Washington Post column by David Broder describes how this bill has ended the spirit of bipartisanship in Congress. This Washington Post editorial calls on the Senate to offer a better bill. And this cartoon illustrates the point nicely.

A group that's helping lead the charge on this issue is the Campaign for America's Future. Another group, Citizens for Tax Justice, has some excellent quantitative research available here. Americans for Democratic Action proposes some alternative stimulus ideas here.
