QATAR, WORLDWIDE: WTO Nov 9 2001
Labor March in Seattle, December 3, 1999 World Trade Organization Talks Open In Qatar, Dissent Expressed Worldwide

The World Trade Organization (WTO) opened its first ministerial since the Battle of Seattle on November 9 in Doha, Qatar. While transnational corporations and leading governments pursue an ambitious new round of trade liberalization, some say that it is more urgent than ever for the anti-globalization movement to raise its voice in the streets to present alternatives to the current path of the global economy.

MOROCCO: CLIMATE CHANGE Nov 7 2001
COP7 Summit in Marrakesh, Morocco, Raises Questions About Trading Emissions

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change's "Seventh Conference of the Parties" (COP7) is set to conclude in two days after meeting since October 29 in Marrakesh, Morocco to finalize measures needed to make the Kyoto protocol "operational." Tense negotiations have been taking place over specific provisions for the "sharing" of carbon dioxide emssions, especially the Protoype Carbon Fund, which, according to Yin Shao Loong of the Third World Network, "pave[s] the way for business interests to seize a brand new market, in the name of greenhouse gas emissions trading." Critics have accused Russia, Japan, Australia and Canada of watering down the provisions, and condemn the entire process for falling dramatically short of the fundamental changes in policy that would have to occur to halt or even slow climate change. Moroccan non-governmental organizations have faced police pressure while calling for the conference to promote sustainable development, especially for the delicate maghreb.

The Climate IMC continues to provide up-to-the-minute coverage of the summit.

HONG KONG: WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM Nov 7 2001
Challenging the World Economic Forum in Asia

From October 29-31 hundreds of the world's business and political leaders met in Hong Kong for the World Economic Forum's East Asia Economic Summit. The summit focused on responding to the worldwide economic downturn, supporting the stability of Asia's economies even as U.S. bombs threaten to destabalize the region. Activists from the Asia People's Solidarity Forum criticized the WEF as an instrument of globalization and accused nations of "[using] the September 11 incident to expand the curtailment of the rights of their citizens and to implement economic policies in furtherance of globalization." Three hundred supporters of the Solidarity and Resistance Against Globalisation Alliance protested the summit on Ocotber 28, defying police warnings.

The World Economic Forum describes itself as a "platform for discussion, debate and action on the key issues on the global agenda." Detractors, who have most recently faced the World Ecnomic Forum's meetings in Salzburg, Austria, Davos, Switzerland and Melbourne, Australia. See coverage of those meetings in the archives of the Austria, Switzerland and Melbourne IMCs.

AFGHANISTAN: HUMANITARIAN AID? Nov 2 2001
Visit the RAWA (Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan) site for more photos: http://www.rawa.org Questioning the Effect of "Humanitarian Aid" in Afghanistan

From the day the first American bomb fell on Afghanistan, U.S. government officials have claimed that the country is fighting the war on two levels -- trying to unseat the Taliban with bombs, and fighting a humanitarian battle against poverty and gender-based persecution. Even before the bombing Afghans had been facing decades of civil war that had forced hundreds of thousands to flee to neighboring countries. Those who remained faced a landscaped riddled with landmines, a Taliban government that punished women daily with supposed religious justification and, most recently, a devastating three-year drought. International aid agencies had tried to clear landmines and stave off starvation in Afghanstan by painstakingly removing mines, one by one from the countryside, and shipping in thousands of tons of food and supplies. Since the bombing began both efforts have halted; hundreds of thousands more Afghans have fled for the (closed) Pakistani border. U.S. bombs have destroyed several humanitarian facilities, such as the office of a mine-clearing program, killing four aid workers, and twice on Red Cross food warehouses. The Taliban have also been condemned for targeting aid organizations.

Since the U.S. began to drop bombs on Afghanstan U.S. cargo planes have dropped almost a million daily food rations. Have these food drops alleviated the increasing humanitarian crisis in Afghanstan or simply served as propaganda for the U.S. military? Has the U.S. helped Afghan people by supporting the questionable Northern Alliance/United Front, or will U.S. actions result in even more war, oppression and poverty for the Afghan people?

Join the Philadelphia IMC in gathering links about the humanitarian situation in Central Asia, including articles about the effect of food drops and questions about human rights in Uzbekistan.

Listen to reports from Between the Lines Radio and other IMC-Radio associates on the humanitarian situation.
