Middle and high schools in Aurora Public Schools each received two ratings from the state. The middle schools received an elementary and a middle school rating; high schools received a middle and high school rating. Fifth-grade students and eighth-grade students who were not achieving at grade level, were allowed to enter the next grade, but were placed in special programs in the middle and high schools so they could receive extra support to help them transition into the next grade level without being held back for a full year. Although there are generally only 15 to 30 students in these programs at each school, the state arbitrarily decided to reconfigure our middle and high schools. For example, South Middle School becomes South Elementary for grades 5 and 6 and South Middle for grades 7 and 8. Central High is defined by the state as grades 10 to 12 and Central Middle is grades 8 and 9. This was done respectively for all APS middle and high schools, even though the students in grades 5 and 8 comprised no more than 15 to 30 students at each school.

We are uncertain if the ratings would be different if the schools' ratings had reflected the true configuration of our middle schools as grades 6, 7 and 8 and our high schools as 9 through 12.

On the other hand, Hartenbach High School and William Smith High School, both alternative programs, were given no ratings. Education Commissioner William Moloney opted to exclude the schools because they are smaller alternative programs for high-risk students. In APS these schools have between 95 and 250 students.

Each school is listed below and given a performance rating of: excellent, high, average, low or unsatisfactory.
