Globalizing Human Rights
At their annual meeting February 3, 2001, Resource
Center members enacted the organization’s mission statement: “The
Resource Center informs, educates and organizes to promote human rights,
democratic participation, economic justice and cross-cultural
understanding in the context of globalization in the Americas.” In 1997,
our board of directors adopted 10 “organizational values”:
1.
Promoting and protecting human rights is fundamental in an era of economic
integration and globalization.
2.
Identifying economic, social and cultural rights, as well as civil and
political rights, is the concrete foundation for justice.
3.
Lasting, mutual and equitable relationships require structures that
recognize and protect the rights of all people—structures that respect
the dignity and diversity of all communities and cultures.
4.
Promoting the voices of the poor, marginalized, silenced and ignored,
while acknowledging the strength of multiple perspectives, enables us to
understand the past and present.
5.
Participatory, grassroots education catalyzes empowerment, action and
change.
6.
Justice requires critical analysis to expose deception and lies. It
requires truth telling.
7.
True democracy guarantees legitimate choices. All people should have the
tools to participate in decisions that affect their lives.
8.
Within the context of global accountability, relations between nations
should be based on mutual respect, equality and the right to determine one’s
own future.
9.
Strengthening local and global communities and linking them creates social
change.
10.
Change is possible through the collective actions of committed people.
