New Year's in Havana
Dec. 27, 2001 - Jan. 4, 2002

Come join us in Cuba for a week of unique intercultural experiences, learning from the Cubans themselves about the many aspects of life in the neighbor island today. Come discover Cuba for yourself. Join us and our Cuban friends to celebrate the arrival of the new year. The majority of your time on this tour will be spent in Havana with day trips to the countryside to visit various communities. Your time in Havana will consist of meeting with organizations, schools and hospitals and learning about the economic and social situation in Cuba. Spend time on the streets of Havana and learn from the Cubans themselves about their country.

Program Highlights:

  • PLEASE NOTE: These highlights are based on previous trips, not all of these activities will be available this year.
  • City tour of Havana by bus or bicycle - your choice!
  • Enjoy Cuban dance and music, from rumba and son, to danzon and casino. Afternoon dance lessons at the hotel. Rooftop music and dancing during the evenings.
  • Meet with an urban planner to discuss the history of the capital and its historic restoration.
  • Visit Casa de Africa to enjoy an explanation and demonstration of folkloric music and dance related to Santeria, an Afro-Cuban religion.
  • Explore a UN Community Development Project. Learn about the United Nations Development Project (UNDP) and UNESCO’s roles in Cuba.
  • Go to the Institute of Tropical Medicine and learn about Cuba’s AIDS policy.
  • Visit the Cuban Council of Churches. Discuss religion in Cuba and what has changed since the Pope’s visit.
  • Participate in group meetings and presentations in the hotel. Workshops include: Ecology, Medicine, Effects of the blockade, and Foreign Investment in Cuba.
  • Visit the University of Havana to meet with faculty from the Foreign Studies Department to discuss US/Cuban relations.
  • Tour La Maqueta de la Ciudad, a scale model of the city.
  • Visit the Martin Luther King Center, and be involved in a discussion on religion and human rights.
  • Visit the Children’s Hospital and meet with a doctor to learn about the Cuban health care system.
  • Spend time in people’s homes. Discuss topics such as the future of the Cuban economy, public health, women, and race.
  • Learn about Cuba’s movement to organic agriculture and permaculture.
  • Visit Las Terrazas community development project. Learn about this area’s reforestation project and enjoy the natural beauty of this unique bioreserve.
  • Visit the Atares community project. Meet with a Santero, a cultural leader, and learn about the popular religion of Santeria.
  • Take a walking tour of Old Havana with an emphasis on architecture, urban planning, art studios, and museums.
  • See Cuban athletes in action. Enjoy a local baseball or basketball game.
  • Speak with a representative from CubaSolar to learn about renewable energy in Cuba.
  • Relax at the Varadero beach resort in Matanzas.
  • Visit an alternative healing hospital and learn about “green” medicine.
  • Hike through Vinales, a mountainous area with natural waterfalls.
  • And of course, enjoy a BIG NEW YEARS’S CELEBRATION PARTY with Cubans and the entire group. Dinner and drinks are included!

Is it Legal to Travel to Cuba?

How to Register:
We must receive your application and a non-refundable deposit of $200 two months before departure. A late fee of $50 will be applied to late applications. Payments by Mastercard or Visa are welcome.

This delegation will be as diverse as possible in terms of race, age and life experiences. We strongly urge people of color to apply. A limited number of partial scholarships are available for low-income applicants.
