Since then, the Zapatista insurrection in Chiapas has been called the first revolutionary movement of the 21st century; a Native American civil rights movement; and the birth of the grassroots movement against corporate globalization. This workshop will explore in very simple terms the Zapatistas, their Maya Indian roots, and the importance of this revolutionary struggle within the context of Mexican and North American history.

ABOUT OUR LANGUAGE CLASSES:

The Resource Center of the Americas offers seven levels of Spanish language instruction, bilingual programs for children and adults, and topical classes for adults during the Fall 2001 session. The language classes emphasize practical skills in speaking and listening. Sessions are small and informal. Instructors teach using the target language, even in the beginning class. They introduce cultural, political and social realities of Latin America and the Caribbean. If you are not sure of your level, drop by the Resource Center to take a brief written exam and look over the course materials. CEH's are available upon request.

All the language classes emphasize practical skills in speaking and listening. Sessions are small and informal. The instructors teach using the target language, even in the beginning class. They introduce cultural, political and social realities of Latin America and the Caribbean. There is no foolproof way to assign students to the appropriate instruction level, but experience shows that the best test is a student’s comfort level with various verb tenses. If you are not sure of your level, drop by the Resource Center to take a brief written exam and look over the course materials.
