SEPTEMBER 2-8, 2002
MEXICAN SUPREME COURT REJECTS INDIGENOUS CHALLENGE TO SHAM INDIGENOUS LAW
The Supreme Court upheld a recently passed law on indigenous rights that was opposed by almost every indigenous organization in Mexico. COSTCO BATTLE HEATS UP IN CUERNAVACA
Leaders of the citizen's movement opposed to the COSTCO mega-mall were threatened with additional arrests. Authorities responded to the non-violent movement with disproportionate police and judicial pressure, apparently in an effort to avoid a repeat of the Atenco situation in neighboring Mexico City where plans for a new airport ware canceled after a nine month protest.
