JOHN E. SUNUNU
Republican - New Hampshire
First Congressional District

John Sununu was elected to a third term in the House of Representatives in November 2000. Since his first campaign in 1996, his top priority has been to provide the citizens of the First Congressional District with the very best representation and constituent service possible. During his tenure in Congress, he has been described by Foster’s Daily Democrat as “a can-do Congressman who keeps his word,” and by Congressional Quarterly as “an emerging power – soft spoken, smart, pragmatic, and a measured legislator of the rarest breed.”

In 2001, John was appointed by Speaker Dennis Hastert to be Vice Chairman of the Budget Committee. He also is a member of the Appropriations Committee where he holds seats on subcommittees that oversee funding for the Veteran Administration, NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Treasury Department, and foreign aid programs. As the first Member of Congress from the Granite State in over 20 years to sit on Appropriations, he has made his mark as an advocate for scientific research, veterans healthcare, and funding for land and water conservation. He also serves as a member of the Republican Policy Committee chairing the Retirement Security, Capital Markets, and Tax Policy Subcommittee.

John’s legislative record as a fiscal conservative has earned him a distinguished 100% rating from the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste. He has also been recognized for his achievements as a champion of small business and taxpayers by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Business, and Americans for Tax Reform.

John has fought hard on a range of issues including full funding the federal special education mandate, accelerating the cleanup of hazardous waste sites, and ensuring that our elderly have access to affordable housing. During his very first year in Congress, he appointed a 16-member Veterans Advisory Council to assist his efforts in protecting the benefits of those who have served our Nation. Along with Congressman Bass, he established the “Congressional Law Enforcement Awards” honoring federal, state, and local law enforcement who exhibit meritorious service above and beyond the call of duty.

John grew up in Salem, New Hampshire, and is one of eight children. He was first introduced to public service at a young age when his mother served as President of the local school board. John attended public schools, graduated from Salem High School, and received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as a Masters degree in Business Administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Business. Prior to being elected to Congress, he utilized his engineering and business skills in the emerging high technology market in 1987 at REMEC, Inc., a manufacturer of microwave electronics; from 1990 to1992 as manager and operations specialist with Pittiglio, Rabin, Todd, & McGrath; and from 1992 to 1996 as Chief Financial Officer and Director of Operations for Teletrol Systems, Inc., a manufacturer of building control systems in Manchester, New Hampshire.

John and his wife Kitty reside in Bedford with their three children.
