Garrett wins Primary Election in a landslide
LAFAYETTE - For Assemblyman Scott Garrett, the third time was a charm.
On Tuesday, June 4, 2002, Garrett came away with a tremendous primary victory defeating his opponents in the five-way race in a landslide.
Garrett, R-24, defeated his friend and fellow Assemblyman, David Russo, by 6,743 votes (15,867-9,124). Garrett received 45 percent of the votes and
Russo received 26 percent. State Sen. Gerald Cardinale came in third with 8,923 votes or 25 percent.
Surrounded by his family, throngs of raucous supporters, and media, Garrett gave a rousing speech at the Lafayette House, saying his previous
attempts to win the GOP nomination paved the way to his victory in the Primary Election.
“We had the opportunity over the years to lay out our message to the public and our message resonated,” Garrett said. NJ Herald - June 5, 2002
On election night, Garrett predicted victory in November, saying that his messages of economic empowerment and strong military defense would be
appealing "to conservatives, liberals, and Reagan Democrats."
“Over the last few months, residents from Bergen County to the hills of Warren County are telling me the same thing: we need a leader in Congress
that will epitomize the courage and optimism that President Bush and the Republican Party stand for,” stated Garrett.
“We need a leader in Congress that will work for the Republican platform to make tax relief permanent, and fight against liberal Democrats who want to raise our taxes.”
“Moreover, security is more than just national defense,” Garrett told the crowd. “We want to make sure our families are secure when it comes to
education, health care, and the environment." Bergen Record – June 5, 2002
When asked about his Democratic opponent in the General Election, Garrett stated the following: “We know little about our opponent in the
fall. However, we do know that she abandoned the party of Lincoln, abandoned the party of Reagan and the party of George W. Bush.
This is an opponent who instead joined the party of Bill Clinton and Al Gore, and of Jim McGreevey and of Sen. Torricelli.”
Considered a decisively Republican district, many national and state Republican leaders are recognizing the significance of the upcoming General
Election.
Carl Forti, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee…described Garrett as "someone who can represent the district well.
He's ideologically in line to represent a district that Bush won (in 2000) and Bret Schundler won (as the GOP nominee for governor in 2001)." Express times – June 5, 2002
“The 5th Congressional District of New Jersey is the 2nd most Republican district in New Jersey, where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats
almost 2-to-1,” commented Jeff Clauss, campaign manager for Scott Garrett.
New Jersey State Senator Cardinale had this to say about Garrett and the 5th Congressional District: "This is a strong Republican district, and
I believe he (Garrett) is the favorite. Bergen Record – June 5, 2002
The General Election is set for November 5, 2002.
