A message from Assemblyman
Scott Garrett -
Republican Nominee for New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District

Over the last few months, residents from Bergen County to the hills of Warren County are telling me the same thing: we need a leader in Congress that will epitomize the courage and optimism that President Bush and the Republican Party stand for. We need a leader in Congress that will work for the Republican platform to make tax relief permanent, and fight against liberal Democrats who want to raise our taxes.

We were able to get our message out and the public has made its choice.

I am honored to be the Republican nominee for Congress in New Jersey's 5th Congressional District. Clearly, my message of economic and homeland security, backed up by my record in the State Assembly of achieving tax cuts and economic growth, resonated well with the residents of the district.

It is important that we recognize the significance of this upcoming election. We live in the 2nd most Republican district in New Jersey, where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats almost 2-to-1. President George W. Bush and Bob Dole won within the Fifth Congressional District and, just last year, Republican Gubernatorial candidate Bret Schundler won the district by a commanding 8% over Democrat Jim McGreevey.

Scott Garrett

The next representative for the 5th Congressional District of New Jersey must demonstrate the resolve and strength to represent this and other issues in order to protect the financial resources of the residents of northern New Jersey and to work with President Bush, not against him.

It’s disgraceful that our families pay more in taxes than they spend on food, clothing, and shelter combined. New Jersey ranks second in the nation in the amount of taxes we send to Washington, DC, yet only ranks 49th in the amount we get in return.

I want to fix this problem –permanently. I ask you to look at my record over the last 12 years in the Assembly. I have cut energy taxes, property taxes, business taxes, income taxes and sales taxes more than 50 times.

I pledge that, as your Congressman, I will continue to be the proven mainstream Republican tax cutter that President Bush needs to help support enactment of his agenda in Congress to implement permanent tax relief, eliminate the death tax, significantly cut the capital gains tax.

We now have the opportunity of electing a Congressman who will represent the mainstream Republican viewpoints of the district. We have moved halfway to accomplishing this goal. As you know, the primary election is not an ending - we have one more election to win.

It is truly comforting to know that I have people like you on our team helping move us over the finish line. I look forward to working with you in the upcoming months.

I thank you for your support and I humbly ask for your continued help as we march toward the General Election on Tuesday, November 5.
