Scott Garrett is the senior Assemblyman from the 24th Legislative District. During his 12 years in the Assembly, he has been the Assistant Majority Leader, Chairman of the Banking and Insurance Committee, and is currently a member of the Education Committee.

Assemblyman Garrett has been the leading anti-tax advocate in the New Jersey Assembly for over a decade and has battled to reduce or eliminate intrusive unnecessary bureaucracy. A strong advocate of states-over-federal rights, Scott continues to fight for home rule on education, school choice, traditional family values and the protection of individual rights. He is an ardent supporter of small business, farmlands and open space.

The Garrett Family

Scott Garrett has led the fight to reform the insurance industry by curtailing unfairness and fraud. Much of the legislation he has forged has been enacted or is currently under serious consideration.Born in Bergen County, Assemblyman Garrett, 42, now resides in Wantage Township with his wife, Mary Ellen and their two young daughters, Jennifer and Brittany.

During his tenure in the Assembly, Scott Garrett has been a member of the Agriculture Committee, the Task Force on Business Retention-Expansion- Export, the Legislative Bi-Partisan Auto Insurance Study Panel, the Governor’s Property Tax Study Task Force and the Women’s Advisory Committee.

The Conservative Republican was appointed to the Legislature in 1990 and has been overwhelmingly re-elected six times, five of those times as the leading Republican Assembly vote getter in the state of New Jersey.

Mr. Garrett has been recognized both nationally and statewide
for his leadership. In 1995, he received the “Proactive Policy of the Year Award” from the New Jersey Business and Industry Association for auto insurance reform that was described as “the most important legislation of the decade”.

The Assemblyman also earned the “Legislative Leadership Visionary Award” from the National Association of the Self-Employed, and was named “Legislator of the Year” by both the Building Officials Association of New Jersey and the National Association of Small Business Owners.

Scott Garrett was graduated from Rutgers University Law School, cum laude from Montclair State University, and from High Point Regional High School. He is an of-counsel attorney with the law firm of Sellar Richardson in Roseland.
