Economic Development

Economic Stimulus – Economic stimulus efforts promoted by Governor Bush immediately after September 11 are helping to create 33,000 new jobs through accelerated spending of $668 million in highway projects and $274 million in school construction projects.

Job Growth – Under Governor Bush’s leadership, Florida is a national leader in job growth with 600,000 more jobs since 1999.  Florida continues to create more jobs than any other state, and was one of only 16 states to show job growth from July 2001 to June 2002.  Florida has been ranked #1 in new business development, with four Florida projects in the top 25 employment-generating projects.

Helping Florida’s Tourism Industry Rebound – Florida recently received a top national award for our marketing campaign following the terror attacks last fall. The campaign matched $20 million in state funds with an additional $25 million investment from the tourism industry and innovative tourism promotions with state agencies, yielding the largest advertising campaign in Florida history – $76 million. As a direct result, during April, May, and June of this year, an estimated 19.4 million visitors came to Florida, down only two percent from the same time last year – a huge improvement from the 19% decline in Florida tourism immediately following September 11.

Diversifying Florida’s Economy – The Bush-Brogan Administration is working to strengthen and diversify Florida’s economy.  The Small Business Survival Index 2002 ranked Florida the 5th most entrepreneur-friendly state in America, and Florida ranks 5th in the nation in the creation of high-tech jobs.  This year, we provided $30 million to create Centers of Excellence at Florida universities to foster cutting-edge technology research.

Increasing Minority Opportunities – Under the One Florida plan, Governor’s agencies have increased spending with minority certified businesses by 232% in three years.

Operation Paycheck – Through this new partnership, state universities, community colleges, technical colleges, and workforce training schools are coming together to help displaced workers learn new skills and obtain new jobs. Almost 200 One-Stop Career Centers across Florida are already working with people to ensure successful re-entry into the workforce.

Mobility 2000 – Improving Florida’s roads and physical infrastructure is important for the future of our state.  Through the Fast Track and Mobility 2000 programs, $525.4 million in transportation projects across Florida have been accelerated, and this year’s budget includes $4.5 billion for transportation projects.  As a result, trade and tourism corridors will be expanded, urban congestion will be relieved, and emergency evacuation routes will be improved.

Front Porch Florida – Front Porch Florida and the Governor’s Office of Urban Opportunity work to empower individuals in the community with the means to revitalize their neighborhoods and combat poverty.  There are 16 Front Porch communities across the state. Governor Bush will continue to work with residents to help them solve community challenges locally.
