Cal Skinner for Governor of Illinois in 2002

Where does Cal Skinner stand on the tollways?

Illinois' tollways can and should be freeways.

Tollway fees are nothing but another tax, another way for the politicians in Springfield to feed their ever-growing appetite for your paycheck. This Toll Tax — which the Illinois Assembly now wants to make even bigger — paid for the tollways years ago. Now it's a cash cow, and the politicians are determined to milk it dry.

Consider the facts: The tollways have taken in more than enough money to pay off the bonds used to fund their construction. Plus, because they are interstate highways, Illinois also received federal funds for their upkeep. That's double-dipping, plain and simple.

Politicians are like drug addicts. They need more and more tax money to feed their spending addiction. They are desperate for more money to feed their pet programs, and they'll do anything to get it. If you drive on the tollways, then you're a prime target.
