BP Monopoly

Jim Sykes worked to stop BP's dangerous monopoly takeover of Arco with Alaskans across the political spectrum, (including former Republican Governors).  Sykes worked with the Federal Trade Commission and won for Alaska--got Phillips, and preserved competition. Ted Stevens supported BP's attempt to increase its monopoly stranglehold over Alaska's North Slope oil by supporting the takeover of Arco in 1999.  Stevens publicly criticized the Federal Trade Commission for doing its job.

Health Care

Jim Sykes has fought for universal access to health care for all since 1990.

Ted Stevens has done nothing for comprehensive health care in 34 years..

Energy Security

Jim Sykes supports Energy Security through conservation and gradual shifts to renewable fuels.  Because the U.S. has less than 3% of the world's oil but uses 25% of the world's oil production this strategy is the only sure solution.

Ted Stevens supports oil corporation loopholes while giving only lip service to renewable energy.   The same companies that effectively control our national energy policy fill Ted Steven's campaign coffers.

Alaska Natural Gas

Jim Sykes supports the All-Alaska Gas Line, which preserves U.S. control, can serve West Coast needs, the route is already permitted and it is most economically and environmentally feasible.  Alaska can lead the way building the all-Alaska gas line to tidewater that will also serve the rail belt. Pilot projects for hydrogen production and Sun, wind, and geothermal energy sources are also essential. Ted Stevens supports the economically shaky Alaska Highway Proposal. The line would end in the volatile Chicago "options" style market.  Alaska could effectively give away its natural gas while oil companies could make billions transporting the gas.  Canadians want their gas in the line before Alaska's gas and have indicated a desire to strip valuable gas liquids, making the Highway proposal risky for Alaska.

 Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Jim Sykes supports the Arctic Refuge: It makes no sense to open the Arctic Refuge--royalties to the state would decrease from 90% to 50%.  There are 30 to 40 years worth of oil are available in the 90% areas already open. Most natural gas lies outside the Refuge. Alaska can provide national energy security and also keep the Arctic Refuge intact. Ted Stevens wants to drill the Arctic Refuge, and is willing to see state lose 40% of its the revenues originally guaranteed as our Statehood birthright.  Rather than end loopholes and corporate welfare to oil companies, Stevens continues to be one of Big Oil's best friends.

Campaign Finance Reform

Jim Sykes works to get big special interest money out of politics.  Jim Sykes worked to implement our current campaign reform law, one of the best in the U.S.  Still, we need to implement public financing of elections, and eliminate corporate and special interest contributions. Outside contributions should not be allowed. Ted Stevens receives enormous amounts of money from Outside special interests. He is the #1 recipient of Defense dollars and he gets plenty of money from transportation and oil sectors.  Stevens has done next to nothing to eliminate special interest campaign donations.  See www.opensecrets.org

 "Star Wars" National Missile Defense

Jim Sykes will work to stop military expenditures for unworkable, programs like "Star Wars" National Missile Defense System. Such military pork provides only temporary chump change jobs while defense contractors make billions, and gives some to Ted Stevens.  Ted Stevens supported un-needed and unworkable multi-billion dollar Star Wars National Missile Defense.  Critical homeland security funds are diverted to this military boondoggle and some defense contractor profits end up in Ted's campaign coffers.

Economics

Jim Sykes recommends repeal of NAFTA and GATT and a focus on building economic self-sufficiency for Alaska.  We need a product development corporation to reduce Outside economic control and stimulate an in-state small manufacturing base that adds value to our own raw materials before export such as:  Dimensional lumber and wood products, fertilizer, pet food and fish leather from fish waste, gold jewelry from raw ore, medicinal plants. Ted Stevens economic policies leave Alaska under control by Outsiders and little has been done to add value to Alaska raw resources before export. Foreign fishing fleets were largely replaced by Outside fishing fleets owned by international banks. Stevens also supported multi-national wood products companies over building a sustainable Alaska economy where Alaskans should saw dimensional lumber prior to export.

Subsistence

Jim Sykes has consistently fought for subsistence rights of all Alaska Native peoples and rural residents.  In addition to a state constitutional amendment, ANILCA may need to be changed to its original intent of preserving Alaska's Native cultures involving special skills and knowledge, sharing and other cultural values that are part of subsistence. Resource survival and subsistence economies are top priorities. Sport and commercial uses are secondary. Ted Stevens has fought for State's rights often working against Native and rural interests.  The State's rights approach takes away the guarantees for all indigenous peoples living within U.S. borders to continue their cultures.  Subsistence is part of all Alaska Native cultures.  Stevens should never have allowed the word "rural"  in ANILCA, since it has only brought heartbreak, litigation and division among Alaskans.
