Jim Sykes is in the process of finishing a documentary about the Northwest Native Trade Fair including the important connections between Alaskans and Chukotkans along with the renewal of traditions among younger generations.
Jim Sykes Fought for Electric Consumers in Mat-Su and Eagle River--Helped Start Utility Watch consumer watchdog group that stopped a deregulation attempt in 2001 and demanded accountability for massive legal and ad expenses in 2002.
Served as Co-Executive Director of Alaska Public Interest Research Group--
Successfully fought for Alaskans' Constitutional freedom to bring fish and game initiatives to the ballot in 2000. Successfully fought to stop the 1999 Permanent Fund Raid (winning 83% to 17%) and also successfully stopped the dangerous monopoly BP takeover of Arco. Working with Alaskans across the political spectrum, including three former Governors, we stopped the takeover, got Phillips and preserved competition while Ted Stevens fought for BP.
We also stopped the Alaska Communications Systems attempt to takeover Matanuska Telephone Association, which would have given ACS control of 90% of local Alaska phone companies. AKPIRG sued to stop the Safeway takeover of Carr's. The state was forced into action, but did a miserable job.
Started and served as Executive Director of Oilwatch Alaska--monitoring the oil industry and government to make sure Alaskans get fair participation and fair compensation for our commonly owned oil resources. Oilwatch Alaska works to minimize overwhelming oil industry influence over government, media and public debate, restore fairness and open government with accurate and independent public information, community education and involvement, research and media message development for the maximum benefit of Alaskans, their communities and environment.
Organized and Established the Green Party of Alaska, (1st State in U.S. to get ballot status) Candidate for Governor 1990 & '94, opened statewide campaigns and forced other candidates to deal with many new issues, including health care for All Alaskans, sustainable product development and small manufacturing, getting big money out of politics, clean air and water, encouraging more involvement of local citizens in decisions across Alaska.
Helped start Chase Community Council, Chaired Citizens Comprehensive Plan Process, facilitating a wide variety of rural and urban viewpoints for 200 square mile area north and east of Talkeetna. Plan was largely adopted by consensus process.
Created 16part radio series "Holding Our Ground" from recordings made across Alaska with the Alaska Native Review Commission, (1984-85), and received Silver Gavel Award from American Bar Association for explaining complex legal issues to the general public. Programs aired across Alaska, several other parts of the country and on shortwave Radio for Peace International.
Created 5-part radio series "Opening the Literate Mind" about peoples ideas of education, technology and what is missing, and received a national Education Writers Award.
Created 3-part radio series "Hazardous Harvest" which told the story of Russians coming to Alaska. Tlingit oral history gave the view from the shore and written Russian accounts gave the view from the ship.
