Cal Skinner for Governor of Illinois in 2002

Can You Trust Jim Ryan Not to Raise Taxes? Skinner Cites Personal Experience and Says, "Not Likely"

Is there any reason to trust Jim Ryan more than Rod Blagojevich? Not according to an incident related by Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Cal Skinner in his latest press release. "Jim can kick around words like 'integrity' all he wants," says Skinner, "but my own experience as a legislator suggests Mr. Ryan is just as guilty of fibbing for votes as his opponent."

Skinner Health Care Proposal Would "Save Big Money" While Providing Wider Coverage for Needy ...Proposals for broadening health care coverage for the poor and elderly usually have one thing in common: extremely high cost to taxpayers. Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Cal Skinner's health care proposal would actually reduce the cost of state-paid health care, even as it increases the amount and quality of care for the needy. "Doctors and insurance companies respond to market forces," says Skinner. "In a free economy, better pay for better care is the rule, and it turns out to be the key to reducing the state's health care costs dramatically."

Skinner Calls for Hiring Freeze, Pay Cuts for State Government Workers ...Instead of more tax increases to cover the latest budget shortfall, Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Cal Skinner is urging a hiring freeze and modest pay cuts for non-union state government workers. "It's wrong to make taxpayers pay for the imprudence of Springfield's elite," he says. "Politicians need to be held accountable for their spending habits." He went on to point out that companies routinely cut spending to offset falling revenue in tough years. Democrat Rod Blagojevich and Republican Jim Ryan both favor tax increases over spending cuts.

Skinner Qualifies for Televised Debates; Blagojevich and Ryan Chicken Out Anyway ...With callous disregard for Illinoisan's right to hear every credible candidate, the Dems and GOP are shutting Libertarian Cal Skinner out of a series of gubernatorial debates even after he met the main criterion for inclusion: a 5% showing in a major poll.

Chicago Tribune op-ed piece calls Skinner a "pol who doesn't duck or dodge"
...Columnist Dennis Byrne says Cal Skinner is the only candidate for voters who want an independent governor who won't play party politics with voters' tax dollars. (Registration may be required to view the article.)

Skinner Advocates "More Realistic" Speed Limit, Says Current Limits Outdated ...Current speed limits turn safe drivers into lawbreakers. Why post a limit of 55 on a road designed for safe travel at 75 or 80?

Personal Security Act Now More Necessary than Ever, Says Skinner ...Research shows that crime goes down, not up, when trained citizens are allowed to carry guns. What are Illinois politicians afraid of?

Republicans Admit Error, Drop Ballot Challenge ...The Illinois Board of Elections ruled unanimously that the Libertarian Party collected 25,000 valid signatures, ensuring that Cal Skinner and other statewide candidates will be on the November ballot. The GOP's challenge was sparked by fear that Libertarians are chipping away at their support base.

Skinner to Taxaholic Legislators: Cure Yourselves with My 12-Step Program ...In 16 years as a state legislator, Cal Skinner voted for low taxes and low government spending. Here he offers advice to help other politicians do the same. They clearly need the advice; look at how state government spending has outpaced inflation in Illinois over the last eleven years!
