Statement By Chairman William Daley

- Contrary to claims being made this morning by the Bush campaign, this election is not over. Again, we want the true and accurate will of the people to prevail, and that means letting the legal system run its course. If at the end of that process, George Bush is the victor, we will respect that result.

Remarks By Chairman Bill Daley

NASHVILLE - I have some news to share with you tonight.

And let me say: I’ve been in politics for a long time. But there’s never been a night like this one.

Just an hour or so ago, the TV networks called this race for Governor Bush.

It now appears that their call was premature.

I want to be very clear about this: according to information supplied by the Secretary of State of Florida, with 99.9 percent of the vote counted, there is a margin of only 1,200 votes out of millions cast – with about 5,000 votes left to be counted.

This is significant for a very important reason: under Florida State law, this triggers an automatic recount.

As everyone in America knows, this race has come down to the State of Florida.

And without being certain of the results in Florida, we simply cannot be certain of the results of this national election.

I want to add that Vice President Gore and Senator Lieberman are fully prepared to concede and support Governor George W. Bush if and when he is officially elected President.

But this race is still too close to call – and until the recount is concluded and the results in Florida become official, our campaign continues.

So I want to thank you all, on behalf of the Vice President, for waiting out here so late tonight – and we hope to have you all back here very soon.

The Unanswered Questions Mount: What Are Bush's Plans for Social Security?

NASHVILLE - Either because he did not know or because he let slip that he wants to work toward full privatization, George W. Bush yesterday implied that Social Security was not a federal program. Today, the Washington Post wrote that Bush is "propos[ing] that for many years the government run two retirement systems at once. To do so without raising taxes, as he has pledged, he would have to sharply reduce the benefits the program currently guarantees."

Al Gore and Joe Lieberman would take steps to protect Social Security for seniors and provide a new choice to encourage younger workers to save for retirement. George W. Bush has made a promise he cannot keep. He has admitted that he would drain $1 trillion of the Social Security Trust Fund into private accounts for younger workers, but he has also promised the same money to seniors for their Social Security checks.

Voters Face Big Choices on the Environment

TAMPA, Fla. - Speaking to voters at Lykes Gaslight Park, Al Gore today focused on the big choices voters face on the environment and said that "pollution must never be the price of our prosperity." Gore has a bold agenda to reduce long-term dependence on foreign oil and protect the environment while creating jobs. He would ban new oil and gas drilling off the coasts of Florida and California. George W. Bush's record in Texas and plans to drill in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge reveal that he prioritizes Big Oil over public health and a clean environment. Bush refuses to support a ban on oil and gas drilling off the coast of Florida.
