History & Introduction

The Greens/Green Party USA is one of the most well-known and dynamic alternative parties in the U.S. today! The reason for our success is that we are much more than just a political party.

Besides running candidates for office (and winning!), our activities include:
  • Encouraging our members and communities to live Green lifestyles.
  • Organizing local Green groups in urban and rural areas across the country.
  • Working on community issues like toxic dumping, homelessness, equal rights and recycling.
  • Fielding ballot initiatives and referendums, and challenging restrictive election laws.
  • Taking positions on and working for (or against) important legislation.
  • Standing up and taking nonviolent direct action for what we believe in

Where we came from
Inspired by the success of the German Green Party, a group of American activists came together in 1984 to form our predecessor, the Green Committees of Correspondence (GCoCs) network. Growing rapidly, the GCoCs soon encompassed scores of locals across the country, and evolved in many diverse directions.

Greens in New England began running candidates for (and winning) office almost immediately. Greens in Wisconsin found a natural issue focus in supporting the treaty rights of Native Americans. Other Greens stopped incinerators, planted trees, served on civic advisory commissions, and protected their watersheds. Several national gatherings were held, out of which grew a grassroots process to draft a national Green Program. These activities brought Greens together from across the US, people committed to building a unified vision for a peaceful, just, and environmentally safe society.

Today: the Greens/Green Party USA

The first full delegated Green Congress was held in Eugene, Oregon in 1989. This congress worked on the Green Program, and the following year, in Estes Park, Colorado, it was adopted. The Green Congress has been an integral part of The Greens national annual Greens Gathering every year since then.

Activity at the grassroots has blossomed. Today, Green locals are now organizing coast to coast, in 46 of 50 states. Greens are rebuilding the inner cities, fighting nuclear waste dumps, challenging undemocratic governments, creating sustainable alternatives to polluting industries, supporting labor unions, educating communities about environmental and social justice, and a host of other activities.

If these activities seem diverse, it's because the Greens encourage diverse approaches, brought together by our basic values of democracy, justice, nonviolence, and ecological wisdom. If you'd like to learn more about the Green vision for a new society, we encourage you to order [or download] the Green Program: an Evolving Vision. With enough voices, minds, and hands, we can change the world!
